This workshop, “Monitoring and Reviewing the Supervisory Relationship,” is part of a supervisor training series designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of key knowledge-based learning outcomes from the supervision curriculum.

In this session, participants will explore how to develop equal and collaborative supervisory relationships while implementing effective review processes to monitor and maintain the quality of supervision. Through structured presentations, reflective activities, and practical discussions, participants will develop strategies for ongoing supervision evaluation and relational management.

Learning Outcomes Covered:

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate the ability to effectively monitor and review the supervisory relationship with the supervisee.

Content Area 6: Developing equal, collaborative supervisory relationships:

  • 6.1 Offering a supportive and collegial relationship in which mutual ideas are shared.
  • 6.2 Enabling supervisees to establish their own autonomous part in the supervisory relationship.
  • 6.3 Enabling supervisees to determine the focus and direction of supervision.
  • 6.4 Enabling supervisees to use supervision to reflect and form own ideas and choices regarding their client work.

  • 7.5 Giving feedback sensitively when reviewing the supervisory relationship and being attentive to the supervisee’s responses and reactions.
  • 7.6 Monitoring the impact of own interventions and adapting to enhance the supervisory relationship.

Presenter

Jo Birch

Jo Birch has over 30 years’ experience as a psychotherapist and executive coach. An accredited supervisor, she remains an active contributor to the counselling, psychotherapy, coaching, and supervision communities — formerly Chair of BACP Coaching and board member of AoCS and EASC.

Currently the holder of the EMCC Global Supervision Award, Jo’s work is recognised for her long-standing professional contribution and leadership in supervision practice. As Director of Crucial Difference, she leads an international team providing supervision training for coaches and supporting leadership development across the helping professions and beyond.

A regular journal contributor, Jo is editor of Coaching Supervision Groups: Resourcing Practitioners (2022) and co-editor Coaching Supervision: Advancing Practice, Changing Landscapes (2019) in the EMCC Mastery Series, and previously series editor of Thinking Global for Coaching Today.

Jo is committed to creating a more just and inclusive world. Having lived and worked in diverse inner city environments, she integrates multicultural learning into her work, delivering training in multiple languages (including English, Russian, and Chinese) and expanding her own cultural understanding through the study of Urdu and Spanish.
