How to get your book published by Routledge

• Do you have something to say about your practice?

• Ready to put that into words as a Book, or a Chapter in an edited book?

• Maybe you know a group of colleagues you would like to include in your book?

WHAT WILL WE OFFER IN THIS SESSION?

• Practical information with a chance to ask questions

• We will also consider our individual ways of setting up the best space to write.

• This will be followed by an experiential writing workshop in which you may move a little closer, and gain some support and encouragement in the process.

WHAT MIGHT YOU GAIN FROM ATTENDING?

• Understand the process of submitting a proposal to a publisher

• Learn what this publisher is looking for from a proposal

• Get to know the overall process of getting a book from your mind to the shelves

• A chance to ask the questions important to you

• A step forward in your writing, or book proposal

• Support and encouragement

And what we can’t guarantee is a publishing contract!

We can however, help you get in the best possible position to have a go… and learn in the process.

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND TO THE SESSION?

I’ve really noticed, practitioners have many important things to say. When people step forward and share their thoughts in writing, we all learn. Whether we resonate with the writing, or not, there is something there with which to engage.

I was once asked to co-edit a book. What an incredible learning curve!

Later, I put together another book on Group Supervision. I had learned so much…. and there was even more to learn!

Both my books are a collection of chapters written by colleagues – some known to me, others not.

In the range of experiences, I noticed some colleagues were ready to put their thoughts into print, whilst others really hadn’t noticed what a gift they had to share, and yet, with some encouragement produced fabulous pieces of work – of real interest and value to others.

Another thing I noticed, which really made me chuckle, is that despite the lovely smooth, gloriously put together text that appears in a published book, there is a human process behind it!

My imagination of a graceful easy flowing chapter was soon catapulted out of existence and replaced with angst, uncertainty, doubt, struggle….and still, at the end….those smooth, gloriously put together words appeared in print!

Then some people asked me…. how can I get my book published?

And here we are!

Bringing together you, a range of practitioners, researchers, trainers, supporters, clients, supervisees, students, experienced practitioners with something to say, directly with one of Routledge’s professional editors.

You…the people with the content. Routledge…. the people looking for content to publish!

What’s not to love!

I’d like this to be the beginning of a series – with other publishing guests as we go along.

For today, I am delighted to welcome Katie Randall from Routledge. She is keen to experiment with us!

In the session, Katie will share very practical information about what Routledge publishes; what they need from you; what to expect…. and so much more. A wealth of practical information and a chance to ask questions afterwards.

We will then look at how you set up your own writing scene! What, who, how, when…and more.

In the second hour let’s get started! This will be run as a writing workshop with some individual time, small group support and debrief, and large group sharing. You will be taking the next step on your journey whatever that is!
