About
Sarah Haywood
I am an art psychotherapist, a supervisor, a trainer and a university-based educator of art psychotherapists-to-be. I’ve been facilitating teaching and training for adult learners for almost 25 years, in a range of contexts. I’m also proudly neurodivergent!
Before qualifying as an Art Psychotherapist, I worked for a decade as a researcher and lecturer at the Universities of Edinburgh and York, with research interests in language and communication. I graduated from the Art Therapy programme at Queen Margaret University in 2010 and was awarded the 2012 British Association of Art Therapists’ Student Essay Prize. My writing has appeared in a range of publications including the International Journal of Art Therapy, and the BACP’s Children, Young People and Families journal. I am currently one of the Lead Associate Editors for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at the International Journal of Art Therapy.
Since registering with the Health and Care Professions Council in 2010 I’ve primarily worked with children and young people, via CAMHS and third-sector organisations. More recently I have also been working therapeutically with adults, through a perinatal mental health service in central Scotland. Since 2017 I’ve been a lecturer at Queen Margaret University, teaching on the MSc Art Psychotherapy and related programmes. I’ve also worked as a trainer for Place2Be, and for Samaritans.
I have a diploma in Cross-Professional Creative Supervision and Reflective Practice, and sometimes take on private clients for supervision. In 2022 I discovered that I am part of the autistic community; I am currently developing a neurodiversity-affirmative private practice for Neurodivergent clients.
