The term depression is used in different ways. We use the term in our day to day conversations with others, to indicate a change in our experiences. The term is also used as a metal health diagnosis and is one of the most frequent diagnosis when someone is experiencing poor mental health.

In this workshop we will look at what depression is (and what it isn’t) and how it can be different for every person we encounter. As therapists we are going to encounter people who have both a mental health diagnosis and those who are living their usual lives but identify themselves as being depressed.

We can develop ways of working successfully with our clients, using a range of ideas from TA and other modalities, that help us understand our clients experience and our own responses to them. Our focus in the workshop will be what works for our clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Will be able to understand the range of the changes people with depression experience
  • Will be able to identify a range of way of connecting with the client and understanding what is needed to help
  • Will be able to identify how these processes are understood using TA ideas and frameworks

Who is this Workshop appropriate for

  • anyone working therapeutically with clients who are depressed

How may this workshop impact your practice

  • Be able to recognise and respond to people experiencing depresion in arrange of ways

Working with Depression and TA Workshop with Barbara Monk-Steel

Presenter

Barbara Monk-Steel

I live and work in Leicester and online. I have been working in mental health for 40 years, first as a mental health nurse and then as a lecturer, counsellor, psychotherapist, trainer and supervisor.

I have always experienced the person to person relationship as central to working with any person, either by supporting and helping another with their mental health and as a teacher, and supervisor.

I am a TSTA (P) but also have an understanding and experience of a range of models of mental health and therapeutic approaches. I believe these are needed as we humans are complex and no model contains all that is needed. TA has always been to me a framework that can hold the different ways of working needed to match the unique experience and changing needs of people as they grow and develop.
