Social Anxiety is one of the most prevalent anxiety disorders, thought to affect about 1 in 12 of the general population in the UK. However, recognition of social anxiety is often poor. This can be linked to the significance use of avoidance in those experiencing social anxiety, which if left unaddressed, can lead to concurrent depression and use of substances.
In this accessible talk, Rachel would like to share ideas about social anxiety and its implications for clinical practice. Using perspectives from attachment theory and developmental psychology, Rachel will provide an account of the nature of early relating and its impact upon the development of a socially anxious self.
Rachel will then provide a comprehensive overview of how social anxiety presents in adults, utilising Cognitive Behavioural, Humanistic and Psychodynamically informed approaches to aid better recognition of this multifaceted experience. This will lead to the sharing of an integrative, relationally informed treatment approach to working with socially anxious clients. In particular, Rachel will highlight the importance of treatment plans that prioritise what is happening both inside and outside of the treatment room.
