At a time when we have so much uncertainty in our lives, we may wonder what is really important, what we can do without–and how we can live comfortably and peacefully at the centre of our lives.

What does it take to live at the centre of your life?

It helps to begin by acknowledging all the people and things that seem so important that you believe you can’t live without them. Attachments, as Buddhists call them, or investments, are those things that your identity is tied up with and you believe are crucial to your survival. Can you dare to imagine what it would be like to let them go and discover who you are in relation to life itself? Once you’ve done that, you are free to make a new choice.

This is what this very powerful Imagework exercise is all about. You imagine your life space, pictured as a boat, and you invite onto the boat the 5 most important people or things in your life. Eventually, you let them go, not getting rid of them but realising you don’t need them to be okay. Then you discover who you are without them. Standing at the centre of your life space, you are now free to invite whomever you want back onto the boat. If you still want to.

This exercise is perfect for people with a tendency to burnout, who tend to drive themselves forward on a path that is no longer right for them because their identity is tied up with the old path. More than that, it is a powerful experience for anyone who wants to find a greater wisdom and understanding of who they really are.

There was a wonderful occasion when Hilda, my group member. had invited God on her boat as one of her five important things. When asked to let God go over the side, she began to cry, saying. How can I throw God out of my life? But once she was brave enough to do it, and had stepped into the centre of the boat, she suddenly said Oh, God is here, in me. It was a profound moment.
