Have you experienced feeling attracted to your client, supervisee or trainee? Have you had times when you feel others are attracted to you?
Human beings are sexual creatures and yet this area is little talked about and rarely discussed. How do we manage it? What do we do with those feelings? What sense do we make of them? Do we always pathologize and explain them away with theory?
As experienced trainers we have numerous personal, supervisory and training examples of attraction. In a recent workshop we ran we experienced an open and stimulating exploration amongst the attendees and it seems that this is still an area that needs more attention.
In this workshop we will consider object relations theory to explore the client/therapist process of attraction and the impact on the therapist’s practice. We would also like to propose that sexual feelings can be a legitimate aspect of the therapeutic encounter.
