Understanding Trauma Through Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, has changed how we understand the nervous system’s response to trauma. This theory provides insights into how our nervous system shifts from states of chronic defense to social engagement, laying the foundation for new therapeutic approaches in trauma care.

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) in Practice

In this workshop, we explore the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), an innovative music-based intervention developed by Dr. Porges. Designed to stimulate the vagus nerve and support autonomic regulation, SSP is particularly effective for clients with trauma histories, sensory sensitivities, or difficulties with emotional regulation. Understanding Polyvagal Theory helps practitioners grasp the mechanisms behind SSP. Applying these tools can enhance client support, moving them from survival to engagement.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is ideal for practitioners who wish to learn how SSP can be integrated into their trauma work, either as a preparation for EMDR by stabilizing the nervous system or as an effective regulation tool for ongoing therapy.

Key Takeaways

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how SSP and Polyvagal Theory can be applied in practice, either by making informed referrals or considering further training to deliver the protocol themselves. Additionally, they will gain practical tools to immediately help clients regulate their nervous systems, such as introducing simple auditory exercises or incorporating basic Polyvagal-informed techniques into sessions.
