We know from many years of research that psychotherapy is generally effective and that most people who come to therapy experience therapy as beneficial. However, for some people, therapy will not be a positive experience, and can even be harmful.

Therapists want to help clients, and usually have positive intentions behind their actions in the therapy room. Unfortunately, therapist positive intentions are not sufficient to prevent harm.

In this workshop we will explore recent research which has identified some of the ways in which therapy can be experienced as harmful, how it can be harmful and, which ways of working and therapist factors can be harmful, and, crucially, what we can do to minimise the risk of clients being harmed in therapy.
