In this monthly series of workshops throughout the year, participants are invited to think differently and develop their reflective practice. We will encourage and develop new and creative ways of looking at case challenges through the lenses of art and poetry and the wisdom of the seasons.

Session outline:

  • Opening with participants defining their supervision case and question in individual, guided reflection.
  • Participants explore a piece of art in pairs or small groups and discuss what emerges from the image for them with their supervision question in mind. There will be encouragement to notice other participants’ viewing perspectives.
  • A reading of the accompanying poem once.
  • Some brief enquiries around the words, phrases and salient points that emerged for participants.
  • Second reading and individual reflection, specifically around own supervision question.
  • Some paired discussion in break out rooms around new, creative perspectives for the question brought by the participants.
  • Main room debrief.
  • The participants receive the poem, art piece and further starting points for further reflection after the session.

Different art and poetry pieces to reflect the month and season will be selected from Gillian’s ‘Choir of Brave Voices’ publications for each session. These will be shared with participants in pdf form with the addition of valuable reflective practice starting points and more information about the background of the creative pieces to support personal or client reflection.

Shirley has extensive experience in cross-cultural work as a coach, mentor and supervisor of coaches and mentors. She often works with people who are working across cultures and might themselves be living in a different country from where they were born. Perhaps thinking in or speaking a language that is not their mother tongue. As a coach, supervisor and facilitator creative tools provide a gateway to a different way framing themes, discovering possibilities and expressing difficult emotions or dynamics when our constraint of language cannot readily or easily express what we are feeling or experiencing. From first-hand experience Shirley believes that imagery, art-based and embodied approaches can work both in-person and virtually. These are tools and skills that anybody can learn. Shirley has fine-tuned her skills in working with creative tools on a foundation of over 30 years in global human resource roles enabling both organisational and leadership development.
