Dr Kalanit Ben-Ari will explore the tricky situations in relationships when one person is thinking about leaving. This one-hour talk aims to give therapists and relationship professionals the tools, methods, and caring ways needed to help couples deal with the tough feelings and choices they’re facing at this important time.

Ambivalence in relationships, especially when one partner considers leaving, presents unique challenges and opportunities for therapeutic intervention. This session explores the dynamics of such relationships, the psychological underpinnings of ambivalence, and the impact it has on both partners and the relationship as a whole.

Key Takeaways:

  • Understanding Ambivalence: Gain a deeper insight into the emotional state of ambivalence, recognizing its signs, and understanding its root causes.
  • Communication Strategies: Learn how to facilitate open, honest, and productive conversations between partners, encouraging them to express their fears, desires, and uncertainties.
  • Intervention Techniques: Discover effective techniques for working with couples in this delicate phase, including how to hold space for both partners’ emotions, how to foster a non-judgmental environment, and how to navigate the decision-making process.
  • Managing Outcomes: Understand how to prepare couples for all possible outcomes, from rejuvenating the relationship to parting ways amicably, ensuring that both partners feel heard, respected, and supported.

This talk is not just about strategies and interventions; it’s about fostering a deeper understanding and empathy towards couples facing the possibility of separation. It’s about empowering therapists to guide their clients through uncertainty with dignity, respect, and hope, whether the journey leads to reconnection or respectful separation.
