In this short and enlightening talk, we address a critical yet often overlooked aspect of therapeutic practice: navigating, resolving and healing ruptures in the client-therapist relationship. Understanding that a successful therapeutic journey is not without its challenges, this discussion focuses on identifying, understanding, and overcoming moments of disconnect or tension that can occur between a therapist and their client.
Participants will gain insights into the nature of therapeutic ruptures, which can range from misunderstandings and misattunements to more profound disagreements or emotional disconnects. We will explore the various factors that contribute to these ruptures, including differing expectations, communication barriers, and the impact of transference and countertransference.
More importantly, this talk will provide practical strategies for therapists to effectively address and repair these ruptures. Emphasis will be placed on developing skills in empathetic listening, self-awareness, and constructive communication. Attendees will learn how to create a space for open dialogue, fostering a therapeutic environment where both therapist and client feel heard, understood, and respected.

Kalanit Ben-Ari, Ph.D. is a senior psychologist, psychotherapist, and author with over 20 years of experience working with couples, individuals, and parents. With a private clinic in Hampstead, London, she is an international speaker, trainer, and supervisor of therapists. Kalanit is a member of the Faculty at the Imago International Training Institute and served as the Chair of Imago UK from 2013 to 2023.
