About this event
The world of psychotherapy is captivated by epigenetics. But what exactly is epigenetics, and how does it differ from genetics? What do we know about genetics and mental health? Can epigenetic modifications affect transgenerationally the vulnerability to mental health conditions?
This workshop is designed to provide therapists with basic elements to understand the fundamental principles of genetics and epigenetics in the context of mental health.
We will begin with a brief introduction to DNA and genes.
We will explore how traits are passed down through generations, with a (very) brief detour into the theories of transmission: Mendelian (natural selection) versus Lamarckian (acquired traits).
While the brain will be the primary focus of this workshop, we will also examine certain aspects of genetics and epigenetics related to the endocrine system (hormones).
I will explain the concept of gene-environment(GxE) interaction.
Some of the important questions we will try to answer in this workshop:
- What is the genetic component of common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, social anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, or borderline personality disorder (BPD)?
- We all know that people who are related are more likely to look alike. But what about their personality traits and general preferences? Beyond their shared environment, are these influenced by genetics too? We will take a closer look at what science has to say about this question.
- What is currently known about the links between stress, trauma, and epigenetic modifications, and how these factors influence vulnerability to developing mental health conditions?
- Finally, we will touch on where all of this leaves us as therapists and how we can leverage this knowledge to improve our work with clients.
I will break down this complicated topic into bite-sized elements, equipping you for better understanding of the current debates around these topics, without hot air.
Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event
- Understand the basic principles of DNA, genetic transmission and epigenetic transmission
- Gain a basic understanding of the genetic influence on development of mental health conditions
- Acquire elements of understanding of the impact of stress and trauma on epigenetics and its trans-generational transmission
Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?
- Psychotherapists, counsellors, mental health practitioners, anyone interested in the topic.
How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?
- Having an informed view on the questions of genetics and epigenetics can lead to better choices of clinical interventions.
ZOOM
This workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our cameras and microphones to interact with each other as a group.

Ana Lund
Ana is a psychotherapist working in private practice in the picturesque town of Ramsbottom, north of Manchester. Ana is passionate about combining neuroscience and psychotherapy. She spends much time pondering and discussing related topics with her colleagues.
Ana has a PhD in Computational Biology and worked in science for a number of years before becoming a psychotherapist.
In her free time, if she is not geeking out on the latest affective neuroscience book or podcast while running in the hills, Ana is probably spending time with her little boy or trying to reach the inner peace using mindful meditation.
