About this event

Art of Listening: How Not to Take Listening for Granted Workshop with Lucia Moja-Strasser

In this engaging and reflective workshop, Lucia Moja will explore the subtle complexities of listening and how it is an ongoing, evolving practice. While many believe they know how to listen, this assumption can sometimes hinder genuine understanding. Lucia draws parallels with artists who never consider their work finished – listening, too, is a craft we must continually refine.

Through her years of experience in music, psychotherapy, and bodywork, Lucia will guide participants to recognise that true listening engages the whole body – not just the ears, but also the heart and the senses. Listening is not a technique that can be mastered; it is a state of mind, always evolving. By maintaining an open mind, respecting difference, and cultivating acceptance, we can foster a deeper connection with our clients without attempting to ‘fix’ them.

Participants will explore the balance between listening to both themselves and others simultaneously. Lucia will demonstrate how this dual awareness helps avoid the pitfalls of self-centred or overly client-focused listening, and how it encourages a cooperative, rather than competitive, dialogue.

Phenomenology and Listening

A key theme of the workshop is the phenomenological approach, where listening involves taking the client’s experience at face value without immediate interpretation or judgement. Lucia will highlight how this approach respects the client’s worldview and fosters genuine connection, supporting them to find their own way forward, rather than imposing change upon them.

Practical Exercises

Lucia will also introduce practical exercises to cultivate stillness, presence, and awareness. These exercises are designed to help participants centre themselves between client sessions and reconnect with the present moment. One such exercise involves focusing on breathing, helping practitioners let go of previous interactions and prepare for the next with a clear, open mind.

Whether you’re an experienced practitioner or just beginning your journey, you will gain valuable insights into how listening is an evolving, embodied practice that is never truly ‘finished.’
