In this accessible talk, Rachel would like to share ideas about dissociated states of self and how to work with them in the therapeutic relationship. In order to do this Rachel will present an account of the impact of early relationships upon the development of the self, paying particular attention to how relational trauma (misattunement or empathic failure) leads to the negation of self-states early in life and the development of false self. Rachel will then present ideas about how to identify such aspects of the self as they attempt to “find relational existence” in the therapeutic relationship (Bromberg, 2011: 59). In particular, Rachel will emphasize the task of deep listening to track the moment to moment unfolding of the therapeutic process. This can provide clients with the opportunity to bring in to awareness denied aspects of the self and integrate these into a more full and authentic real-self experience. Rachel’s aim is to present these important ideas in an easy-to-digest manner, making them accessible to both trainees and qualified practitioners alike.
