A term coined by philosopher and psychologist, Eugene Gendlin, the felt sense is widely used in somatic approaches to therapy including sensorimotor psychotherapy, Hakomi, and somatic experiencing.

Felt sense work helps people to identify the nuances that weigh in on their feelings. It allows people to feel the more descriptive qualities associated with an emotion, like “heaviness” ‘fuzziness” or “frozenness” for example. This helps diffuse the intensity of the emotion, making it more tolerable to process.

Felt sense work plays a key role within trauma processing where a client is encouraged to move away from the story and into their present moment experience observing how it unfolds moment by moment. This work helps a client to develop a greater capacity to be with their experience thus increasing their window of tolerance.

We’ll start the workshop by exploring attention and our attention patterns before moving into the body and getting to know the felt sense.
