What happens when the skin is incised, cut or punctured? What deep meanings does this gesture have? There are many possible answers because there are many possible meanings behind these behaviours.

Freud wrote:

“The ego is ultimately derived from bodily sensations emanating from the surface of the body”.

And Anzieu talked about a Skin-Ego, for which the skin is not only an envelope but also something that gives shape to the body and to the person as an experiencing subject.

Reflecting on the phenomenon of self-harm in adolescence is very important in today’s society and in this workshop, we will begin to explore the meanings behind these behaviour as well as providing some ideas that can help and support young clients.

We will analyse self-harming in adolescence from a cultural and clinical point of view and use some references to TA theory such as the Ego States boundaries theory, the somatic Child and Impasse theory to support this.

There will also be opportunities to explore a collection of case studies taken from Fabiola’s professional experience to provide some practical tips on how to work with these “wounds.
