Archetypes are universal patterns of behaviour. A knowledge of archetypes gives us insight into our own behaviour, the behaviour of others, and a deeper understanding of the way we relate to one another.

All archetypes have a light and a shadow aspect to their manifestation. The shadow has power because, being unacceptable to us, it remains hidden in the dark. Acknowledging and integrating the shadow reduces its unconscious impact. As Carl Jung said, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

Many healers and empaths have the Rescuer archetype which is why they are drawn to their profession. The instinct to reach out to help our fellow human beings, when they are in need, is a noble one. However this sometimes has a down side. Our helping can become a habitual response – something we have to do in all scenarios, which can lead to burn out. Our helping can come from a wounded aspect in ourselves (the Wounded Healer archetype) whereby we unconsciously seek to complete a storyline in our own psyche, which again can lead to burn out.
