Trauma is part of the warp and weft of our lives. It is a powerful unresolved experience. It can have many faces. It can squeeze out our joy. In this online event, I go much further than flight and flight. I present and discuss the complex and sometimes subtle other ways that trauma manifests. I unpack particular symptoms and present ways to mitigate trauma, showing how it may be possible to move on from surviving to growing and even thriving, post trauma.
I have, since the first lockdown, been writing and thinking about trauma more intensively. My ideas about trauma symptoms and ways to mitigate them developed into a manuscript: 20 Ways to Break Free From Trauma. This book is to be published by Jessica Kingsley in November 2024.
During the workshop, I will be sharing my thinking about trauma, sharing snippets from the book, offering ideas for meditations and visualisations and giving space to participants to consider what helps us understand when we overwhelmed by trauma and think about how we can build resilience.
Learning Objectives:
- To understand the major symptoms of trauma and how they manifest
- To understand some ways to mitigate and dissipate trauma
- To learn how to spot signs of trauma in the consulting room
Who is this appropriate for?
- Therapists and therapists in training
How may this impact your practice?
- The ‘too much’ of trauma is often held in the body. Participants will learn how to notice signs of trauma in a client’s presentation and be given some practical tools to assist their client and regulate the overwhelm.

Presenter
I am Philippa, a counsellor, psychotherapist, supervisor and author with over 30 years experience. I trained originally at the Metanoia Institute in Integrative Psychotherapy. I have also trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and Complex Trauma and Dissociation.
I am a visiting tutor at the Banbury Counselling Academy.
My special interest is in trauma. I have published several papers on the subject and contributed chapters in a book: ‘The Change Process in Psychotherapy During Troubling Times’ (2022: Routledge). My long held interest in working with the homeless and in training volunteers is in making theory accessible through psych-education and using straightforward tools to help regulate the nervous system.
My videos on the 20 point tour of trauma are soon to be released on U-Tube. Please look out for them as they give a great taster and my ideas about trauma!
