Which theory is best for depression, anxiety, relationship issues etc? These are questions that I have been asked many times over the last 20 years of psychotherapy practice. Which is the best, which is the worst, which is the most effective? We will all probably have a view on this and at the same time these views may vary widely. Research indicates that in its broadest sense counselling and psychotherapy are effective. It also supports a position that effectiveness is not about the theory and that all approaches come out about even.

So why do we train in theory? Why do we choose the theories we choose? What are the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, our theories and our clients?

Human Beings are meaning in making creatures, we create narratives in our heads to help us make sense of the world and we often call that reality. Counselling and Psychotherapy theories can be seen as just another narrative. In training as a counsellor or psychotherapist, there are many different narratives and we choose one (or several) that make sense to us and fit with our own personal narratives. Yet, how do those narratives affect our client work?

In this workshop we will be exploring this constructivist position and look at how we and our clients create meanings and form narratives to make sense of ourselves, other people and how the world works. If we take this position as central to our work as counsellors and psychotherapists, what does this mean regarding what we actually doing in the therapy room with our clients? How can we account this to be as effective as possible in our work?
