In this session, Benita Stafford-Smith explores the intricacies of internal supervision, focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. Drawing from her extensive experience in supervision within organisations, Benita examines the dual aspects of being an internal supervisor: overseeing internal coaches and developing one’s internal supervisory capacity. Her approach emphasises the complexity of working within an organisation, where internal politics and culture play a significant role in shaping supervision dynamics.

Benita begins by highlighting the dual purpose of internal supervision: supporting coaches and ensuring they develop the skills to self-supervise. She encourages participants to consider their own roles and experiences as internal supervisors, fostering an interactive session where shared experiences and insights enrich the discussion. This reflective approach aligns with Benita’s belief in the importance of standing back to gain a clear, objective view—both as a supervisor and for those in supervision.

A significant theme of the session is the complexity of internal supervision due to organisational politics and culture. Benita points out that internal supervisors are often embedded in the very systems they supervise, which creates unique challenges. For example, supervisors must navigate internal dynamics, such as restructures or shifts in leadership, while maintaining the boundaries of confidentiality and trust. Benita uses real-life examples, including her work across different cultural contexts like the US, Singapore, and Kenya, to illustrate how national and organisational cultures can impact supervision. Throughout the session, Benita discusses the importance of contracting and managing relationships within the organisation. She highlights that supervisors often wear multiple hats, such as managing coaching portfolios or supervising contract coaches, and must carefully balance these roles to ensure both effectiveness and ethical integrity. Benita also touches on the evolving nature of coaching and supervision, particularly in the context of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), and its potential impact on supervision practices.
