In this workshop we will look at the sorts of experiences people have when in a psychotic episode and how to recognise them. People in an active psychotic episode need specialised help, but many people live meaningful and engaged lives after a psychotic episode has subsided. We all share the same life events and challenges, and deserve to have a positive sense of well- being and an underlying belief in ourselves and others.
We will briefly look at the different kinds of psychotic experience and the idea of recovery.
People who have had psychotic episodes come to therapy, and for many of the same reasons that any client engages with therapy.
We will explore how to work with someone who has had, but is not currently experiencing a psychotic episode, and what to be aware of to maintain safety, while supporting them to live a satisfying and meaningful life.
We will also look at how to engage with someone who’s mental health is deteriorating and when to offer support rather than active therapeutic work.

Presenter
I live and work in Leicester and online. I have been working in mental health for 40 years, first as a mental health nurse and then as a lecturer, counsellor, psychotherapist, trainer and supervisor.
I have always experienced the person to person relationship as central to working with any person, either by supporting and helping another with their mental health and as a teacher, and supervisor.
I am a TSTA (P) but also have an understanding and experience of a range of models of mental health and therapeutic approaches. I believe these are needed as we humans are complex and no model contains all that is needed. TA has always been to me a framework that can hold the different ways of working needed to match the unique experience and changing needs of people as they grow and develop.
