What happens when two people sit together and one is the therapist and one is the client?

Understanding how therapy works helps us to do more of what is effective and build up our skills. As a client, being able to share with another person what you are thinking feeling and doing and to reflect upon it in a safe space is all part of the frame that holds the therapy and enables it to work. Looking at the aspects of what we do as therapists and why we do it can help us to synthesis and integrate meaning into our work for ourselves and our clients. It also helps us to guide our clients in understanding what may be experienced in therapy and how it can be of benefit.

In this workshop we will look at what goes on in the therapy that makes it therapeutic. We will look at ideas such as attachment, attunement, reparative work and decontamination to understand how the interventions we make with our clients are effective.

We will use examples from our own work as therapists, clients and trainees to explore what works and how it works.
