Workshop Details

Supervision is one of the most important aspects of our private practice as counsellors or psychotherapists. It is for this reason that I’ve taken the time to cover all the bases of what we need to offer our supervisees, and what we should be getting as supervisees ourselves.

In this workshop, I’d like us to explore in a more practical sense, the 5 theories that I believe cover most if not all the areas and intricacies of supervision. The model I developed from these theories has served me well through my years as a supervisor, and I hope it will do the same for you.

As always, the main goal of supervision is to keep us working to a high ethical standard, as well as keeping us as supervisors, which in turn keeps our supervisees safe, and in turn keeps their clients safe. In order to do so, we might as ourselves these questions:

  • What happens once the client leaves the room?
  • How does the client impact you through your work, and what to do with it?
  • Why do I need to cover all the bases in supervision, and what are these?
  • Who is responsible for knowing and applying these bases of supervision?

Each of the theories we’ll look at, focuses on different aspects of the supervisory process and they compliment each other. They are all key to different issues that need to be taken care of in order to have safe and ethical supervision.

Through practical exercises and reflection, we will be covering:

  • The different relationships that occur within the work (client-therapist-supervisor-profession) and how each is affected by the other
  • The training stages of development of the supervisee (from trainee to experienced) and awareness of what the supervisee might need from us at different stages
  • Teasing out the functions of supervision – restorative (self-care, support, growth), normative (“quality control”, keeping the therapist ethical), and educational (skills development)
  • Practical aspects such as contracting, agenda setting, reviewing, repairing issues, creating a safe space for the supervisee
  • The different aspects (at least 15!) that can be discussed in therapy, other than client work
  • Who is responsible for what in the different relationships (client-therapist-supervisor-profession)

Presenter

Karin Brauner

Karin Brauner is a twice published author, a bilingual coach/counsellor/psychotherapist, as well as a supervisor in private practice. She trained in Guatemala and in Brighton, England. Karin has always been interested in many areas, which focus on her training as a therapist, but also her passion for writing and IT. These have led her to have a variety of services and product offerings, which she keeps adding to. These include social media marketing and content creation, as well as website support, tutoring, academic support, and other areas.

Karin is passionate about everything she does, and she enjoys seeing her colleagues and clients thrive in their work and lives. This is why she’s offering these workshops (and other courses to come in the near future). She enjoys supporting people be the best they can be, meeting them right where they are, and together figuring out what the best way forward is.

Marketing on social media became a focus of Karin’s back in 2017, when she started blogging. This propelled her practice into moving from 2-4 clients, to a full client list, followed by supervisees and now coaching clients as well. This means she can now offer the learning she’s done in the past few years, to practitioners starting their practices or thinking of growing their practices but needing the practical support to do so.

That’s what Karin offers – practical support to get you on the right track to building a successful business (whatever that means to each one of us individually).
