Harry Potter has become a great part of the culture and everyday lives of children all over the world. Among other things, the series acquired popularity because of its relatability – it had shown us the eternal topics in humankind – the challenges of growing up, dealing with loss, the importance of friendship, the battle against outer threats, but, more importantly, the battles that are going on inside us.
Because of that, some parts of the series became a great metaphor for our mental health.
During this workshop, we will touch on several points:
- Why do we love our favorite shows/books so much and why do we keep re-reading and re-watching them?
- How can we use the client’s love for Harry Potter in psychotherapeutic work?
- How is trauma, loss, depression and anxiety depicted in the series?
- What lessons in dealing with issues we can learn?

Dubravka Pešorda is a psychologist (9 years), TA-P trainee (4 years) and a Potterhead (21 years). When she finally accepted that her Hogwarts letter will not arrive, she decided to explore another magical world – the human mind. She is currently working in her private practice in Split, Croatia and pursuing her MSc in Transactional Analysis at Metanoia Institute. She uses popular culture in her work a lot, both as a therapist and as a trainer.
