Jennifer Hough has had an interest in critical mental health perspectives for many years after witnessing the dehumanising biomedical model of care of the mental health services. As a journalist, she wrote about the mental health services and sought to amplify voices expressing concern about the status quo of treatment in Ireland. Currently, Jennifer works as research and policy officer with Alcohol Action Ireland. In this role, she advocates that government should implement trauma informed systems and services for people in emotional distress. Her interest in mental health reform continues, most especially following the passing of her sister, Valerie, who died after 20+ years as a client of the mental health services. She is speaking today in a personal capacity.
