Justice for Black Boys: The Role of Black Women Therapists Workshop with Mary Pascall and Shyronie Davis

If you’re a Black woman in the UK interested or working in counselling, psychology, social services or coaching, you won’t want to miss this conversation. This is the second event in a new programme series: Black Women Therapists In Conversation, featuring a range of motivational speakers.

For this 1-hour session, Mary Pascall welcomes Trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist and Trauma-Informed Practitioner Shyronie Davis, who will explore psychodynamic and trauma-informed approaches to working with young Black boys in the UK criminal justice system. Shyronie will invite us to reflect on the unique challenges and systemic barriers Black women practitioners encounter in this work.

  • Suitable for Black/BIPOC women in the UK interested or working in counselling, psychology, coaching, social work and other helping professions.

Participants will leave with:

  • Strategies for supporting Black boys in the UK, in a culturally competent and trauma-informed way.
  • Tools for navigating isolation and microaggressions.
  • Practical tips for self-care and mental well-being.

This event will be recorded and you can use the ticket function to pre-purchase the recording before the event. This will be useful for colleagues who are not able to attend the event live and also for those who attend the event live and want to watch it again.

ZOOM 

This event will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our cameras and microphones to interact with each other as a group.

Mary Pascall

Mary Pascall is a psychotherapeutic counsellor, group facilitator and mentor in private practice, and host for BWTOC UK. Mary is also an associate tutor for the post-graduate diploma in person-centred counselling at The Norwich Centre, Norfolk, UK. She is registered with the British Association For Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and with the Black African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN, https://www.baatn.org.uk/). Specialising in working with transcultural issues through a person-centred lens, her approach is relational, racial justice allied and social justice allied. Within her practice, Mary offers counselling for adults, mentoring for counselling trainees and, as a group facilitator, a tailored programme of online and in-person experiential workshops offering an enabling space, in which participants can explore the impact of race and culture on well-being within the current climate, the context of their work, training or supervision.

Shyronie Davis

Shyronie Davis is CEO of London-based educational initiative Rooted Wisdom and Trainee Psychodynamic Psychotherapist.

Shyronie is a trainee psychodynamic psychotherapist and trauma-informed practitioner. She specialises in supporting Black adolescents and addressing neurodiversity. Her work centres on Black boys in the UK criminal justice system, exploring the therapeutic, social, and systemic implications of their experiences, in addition to the psychological impact of racial identity, trauma, and incarceration. Shyronie examines the countertransference and complexities of being a Black woman supporting Black boys within predominantly white institutions in the UK – including the criminal justice system, prison settings, and therapeutic spaces. Through her work, she addresses themes of identification, radicalised trauma, and the challenges of representation in mental health care and rehabilitation.
