Rethinking ‘Mild’ Eating Disorders: Risks Therapists Can’t Ignore Workshop with Kel O’Neill

‘In Conversation’ Session 2 (of 5) REGISTER FOR THE FULL SERIES HERE

Do you choose to work with only ‘mild’ eating disorders?

As therapists, we might feel more comfortable supporting clients we perceive as having ‘mild’ eating disorders, trusting that their struggles are manageable within our skill set. But how often do we stop to question what ‘mild’ really means? And is it ever helpful—or accurate—to describe eating disorders this way?

In this reflective conversation, Kel O’Neill and John (OE) invite you to explore how the concept of ‘mild’ eating disorders might shape therapeutic practice, decision-making, and client outcomes.

We’ll reflect on:
• What the term ‘mild’ implies and whether it’s a helpful or accurate label.
• How assumptions about severity could influence your work with clients.
• The risks of oversimplifying the complexities of eating disorders.
• The importance of greater priority on client safety.

This relaxed and thought-provoking session isn’t about offering fixed answers but creating space to examine assumptions, reflect on practice, and engage in meaningful discussion. Attendees are welcome to join the conversation, share insights, and ask questions.
