Ability to account for symptoms of psychological distress and functioning (in the context of cultural norms) over assessment and therapy

SCoPEd Competence Addressed

· Competence 2.5.B – Ability to conceptualise, evaluate and take account of a range of mental health problems, symptoms of psychological distress, functioning and coping styles (with due understanding of cultural norms), during assessment and throughout therapy

Workshop Description
This workshop is part of the SCoPEd Training series, designed to support practitioners in meeting the knowledge-based competences outlined in the SCoPEd framework.

In this session, participants will receive training around ways of conceptualising client presenting and underlying issues throughout assessment and therapy . This important competence is at the core of ethical and professional counselling and psychotherapy practice, enhancing clinical decision making and client welfare, and informing the therapeutic process.

Through a structured presentation and interactive elements, participants will explore, among other aspects, the following:

  • Revisiting and broadening our understanding of various models of understanding distress, deficit and growth over the work that we do
  • How we might understand cultural norms in the context of client deficit and growth
  • A fundamental question: What is the competence really asking of us as practitioners?

This training is essential for practitioners seeking to revisit and refine their understanding of client presenting and underlying issues over therapy to meet accreditation requirements under the SCoPEd Framework, as well as for practitioners, supervisors and organisational leaders who work and lead in this ever-present area of therapeutic practice.
