Transactional Analysis theory has given us some wonderful concepts to work with, and practitioners and clients alike love TA for its flexibility, its straightforward application, and its easy to grasp descriptions of psychological phenomena. This straightforwardness can sometimes become something of a straight jacket though, and we can start to mistake simple-to-understand models for reality rather than the conceptual road map that they are.

The last few decades have seen lots of different influences on the practice of psychology, and the relational turn in particular has led to a reworking of many of our ideas about what it means to engage in the process of change with other human beings. Rather than seeing psychological problems as ‘faults’ that need to be ‘fixed’ we are now much more likely to talk about co-creation, pluralism, and constructivism. In this workshop I will present an overview of contemporary influences before offering some new interpretations of the classical TA concepts of script, ego states, and intrapsychic conflict (impasse). There will be lots of time for questions and some discussion, but I hope that we all come away with many more questions than answers! Come and join us in what we hope will be a fun and lively experience as we play around with some of our favourite TA concepts.
