About this event
Trauma is considered a ‘wound’. Trauma is different from stress, in that we survive it, rather than ‘cope’ with it. Survival strategies include fight, flight, freeze, disconnect and shut-down, please and appease and attachment-cry.
Because of these survival states, our clients may often present with dysregulation in their nervous system, which may look like hyper-arousal (mobilisation through the sympathetic nervous system) or hypo-arousal (immobilisation through the dorsal vagus).
This workshop will focus on various safety and regulation techniques you can use as a professional when you work with traumatised clients, so that clients start to feel safer within themselves, others and the world around them. This is in line with the 3-Phase Trauma Model, originally developed by Janet and later Herman.
The safety techniques we will cover include:
- Using our own regulated nervous system
- Using an anchor
- Container exercise
- Grounding Techniques
- Breathing techniques
- Dual awareness
And much more!
This workshop will include a demonstration of the Anchor, which allows for more experiential learning.
Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event
- To gain knowledge and an understanding of a variety of safety techniques relating to the nervous system.
- To be able to discern which techniques resonate most, so that participants can start to implement them safely with traumatised clients.
- Participants recognise which state of the nervous system might benefit most from which particular technique.
Who is This Workshop Appropriate For?
- Student and qualified counsellors, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, psychologists, social workers, support workers, nurses, GP’s, psychiatrists, mental health workers, probation officers, and anyone else who works with trauma.
How May This Workshop Impact Your Practice?
- When you start to incorporate these techniques, you are supporting your client to become more regulated, which helps them to feel safer within themselves, with others and in the world around them.
