We all have parts and it’s a very natural aspect of our development, to develop different sub-personalities to meet the world.

Workshop Details

The energy that has us achieving, being good, sensible or creative might have got recognition within the family so may have become dominant. We then identify in this way and it becomes how we describe ourselves to others. We may also be aware that we have opposite parts that like to sit and watch dramas or take risks in life, being far from sensible! Having access to various different parts enable us to feel whole and fulfilled in life.

When trauma has occurred a protective mechanism, called a trauma survival strategy, is set in motion which split off [perceived] ‘good’ and ‘bad’ parts, ‘positive’ and ‘vulnerable’ parts so they can’t see each other and therefore can’t integrate. This can leave a person feeling very out of balance in life – feeling chaotic, chronically overthinking, a perfectionist or a high achiever but disconnected with people – and can lead to destructive patterns of behaviour.

In this workshop you’ll be introduced to the Structural Dissociation model created by Onno van der Hart, Ellert R.S. Nijenhui and Kathy Steele and later developed by Janina Fisher who integrated sensorimotor psychotherapy into the model. This model provides insight into what happens to the personality in trauma and how a person can start to integrate split off trauma parts by developing curiosity and compassion.
