Over the past few years, there has been a growing awareness within the field of trauma therapy of the value of working with ego states, or ‘parts’ with clients who have experienced childhood and/or complex trauma and clients who have a dissociative process.

The concept of ego states was originally devised by psychoanalyst, Paul Federn during the 1940’s and 1950’s. Federn’s work was developed by Eric Berne, the founder of Transactional Analysis, and John Watkins who developed ego state therapy (a variant of hypnotherapy). Theories around ‘parts’ or multiplicity of self are embedded in a number of therapies, ranging from the person-centered concept of configurations of self, to the concept of schema modes from schema therapy. Even recent therapies such as Internal Family Systems which work with ‘parts’ are based on ego state theory.

In this workshop we will explore a number of safe, gentle, tried-and-tested ego state techniques to promote healing from the effects of trauma, integration and to enhance self-soothing and self-compassion.
