Our culture teaches us that we can live almost entirely in our heads and our mental world. Thus, our self-development, therapeutic or healing journey can also focus almost entirely on healing and transforming the mental space.
Yet we also know that all of our experiences are embodied. Our emotional reactions create parallel chemical and physiological responses in the body. And we can often experience pain, tension or exhaustion in the body as a lagging reflection of intense emotional experiences and life challenges.
In other words, our bodies are physiological reflections of our inner mental and emotional states. Our bodies store memories, hold onto emotions, and contain levels of wisdom and knowing that are not as accessible or obvious to the conscious mind.
If thoughts are the language of the mind, then feeling or sensation is the language of the body.
And an important part of our transformation journey must eventually lead to an understanding of how to work with and listen to the body. This includes exploring ways to help the body to let go of old tensions and stored emotions, understanding how to de-code the meaning of sensations in the body and learning how to really listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us.

Sarah Beth Hunt is a meditation and breathwork coach, yoga teacher and founder of Messy Luminous Being online platform. She received Ph.D. in Indian Studies from the University of Cambridge, and has trained in both the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhist meditation and traditional yoga through the British Wheel of Yoga. She currently works with clients using movement, breathwork and mind-training practices to harness the body’s physiology and the mind-body connection and transform their inner state.
