About this event

Choir of Brave Voices: Seasonal Reflective Practice Using Art and Poetry Workshop with Gillian Walter and Shirley Smith

In this monthly series of workshops throughout the year, participants are invited to think differently and develop their reflective practice. We will encourage and develop new and creative ways of looking at case challenges through the lenses of art and poetry and the wisdom of the seasons.

Session outline:

  • Opening with participants defining their supervision case and question in individual, guided reflection.
  • Participants explore a piece of art in pairs or small groups and discuss what emerges from the image for them with their supervision question in mind. There will be encouragement to notice other participants’ viewing perspectives.
  • A reading of the accompanying poem once.
  • Some brief enquiries around the words, phrases and salient points that emerged for participants.
  • Second reading and individual reflection, specifically around own supervision question.
  • Some paired discussion in break out rooms around new, creative perspectives for the question brought by the participants.
  • Main room debrief.
  • The participants receive the poem, art piece and further starting points for further reflection after the session.

Different art and poetry pieces to reflect the month and season will be selected from Gillian’s ‘Choir of Brave Voices’ publications for each session. These will be shared with participants in pdf form with the addition of valuable reflective practice starting points and more information about the background of the creative pieces to support personal or client reflection.

Shirley Smith

Shirley Smith is passionate about the potential of working with creative methodologies in supervision. She has been actively involved in enabling the ongoing development of leaders as a vehicle in support of wider culture and systemic change.

Shirley works mainly in multi-cultural environments around the globe from her current base in Vienna, Austria. She mainly provides supervision to individuals and small groups who are keen to access supervision as part of their own ongoing professional development and self-care. They also want to develop their own practice in working more ‘creatively’. She has been experimenting more recently with ways of making creative supervision accessible online and also with and without video. A kind of learning laboratory.
