LGBTQ+ Intimate Partner Inclusion Strategies Workshop with Steven Maxwell

How can services/practitioners promote and provide more inclusive support to LGBTQ+ experiencing intimate partner violence?

This talk builds upon the Introduction to LGBTQ+ IPV/Domestic Abuse talk, with a focus on inclusion strategies.

1 in 3 LGBTQ+ individuals will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime, the same rate as cis heterosexual women, which has profound impacts on mental health.

Up to 42% of LGBTQ+ experiencing intimate partner violence will experience help seeking barriers. Ranging from recognising being a victim, fear of attending services and experiencing prejudice when accessing support.

This talk will explore the range of inclusion strategies to promote services access and inclusive communication tools for screening, assessment, and safety planning.

Learning Objective Participants Can Expect From This Event

  • Increased awareness of strategies that promote more inclusive services access to LGBTQ+ individuals with experiences of IPV.
  • Increased comprehension of inclusive tools that more effectively engage LGBTQ+ individuals in IPV assessment and safety planning.
  • Increased awareness of wider LGBTQ+ IPV ecological wider support networks and resources that provide safe support.

  • Any service, health and social care practitioner, policing, education provider. policing and justice services engaging with LGBTQ+ with experiences of IPV.

  • By the end of the talk, you will have increased knowledge to more inclusively engage and support LGBTQ+ with experiences of IPV.

This workshop will be hosted on the Zoom meeting platform where we will use our cameras and microphones to interact with each other as a group.

Steven Maxwell

Dr Maxwell (PhD) is a clinical academic with 20 years experience within the mental health care system, with diversity in supporting people experiencing complex health issues, including trauma. He has a PhD in Global Public Health from UCL, which was related to minority sexual health inequalIties. Over the recent three years he has passionately focused his research and teaching on driving work to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ intimate partner violence. This work has focused on the UK in engaging with government to drive more informed policy and the development of practical resources to better support culturally competent service provision.
