Autogenic training (AT) is a recognized technique in psychology for combatting stress and improving health and concentration. This technique was originally developed by the German psychiatrist Johannes Heinrich Schultz and it is one of the most famous and oldest techniques for achieving deep relaxation. AT represents the integration of selected exercises whose main goal is to get rid of excess psychological and physiological tension. In this introduction, you will learn about the original exercises developed by Schultz, but also about AT without autosuggestion, which represents a continuation, synthesis and improvement of techniques of the classical AT, based on research by psychologist Milenko Vlajkov. You will also learn about a few pre-exercises, in the form of short relaxation techniques, which you can easily use with your clients or by yourself. We will do together two of these and one main exercise, so that you can get an idea about this technique. We will also exchange thoughts about how you can combine AT with different techniques, like visualization for example or when working with TA injunctions.
AT is indicated for:
- People who are stressed, work hard, and are at risk of, or already in, burn out and suffer from chronic tension;
- For panic attacks and anxiety;
- Headache, thyroid problem, or hormonal imbalance;
- Prevention or treatment of psychosomatic illnesses;
- High blood pressure and bronchial asthma;
- Psychogenic sterility;
- Mood regulation;
- Professional athletes, especially where deep concentration and the ability to maintain attention for a long period of time is required (diving, tennis, etc.);
- Students and employees who need to manage an excessive load of work during a busy/examination period;
- Healthy people to achieve better concentration and relaxation, but also to increase creativity, imagination, fitness level, and increase the capacity for work.
- It is also a great way for counsellors and therapists to quickly rest/ ground themselves between clients
Deep relaxation techniques are also used before public presentations, job interviews and stressful meetings.
Autogenic training is recommended in the 2016 European Society of Cardiology Guideline for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in persons who experience psychosocial problems. The International Journal of Dermatology conducted a study and found that Autogenic Training was potentially helpful for improving aged skin.
