Denise Knowles

I joined Relate in 1990 and qualified as a counsellor two years later. I'm a BACP accredited counsellor; and maintained my couple counselling caseload and expanded my expertise, becoming qualified in psychosexual therapy, family counselling, training, and supervision. I'm a well-known media spokesperson and have been a frequent speaker on major national television news networks commenting on current relationships and family topics: for example on the BBC One O'Clock News, Sky News, and Radio Five Live. I went head to head with John Humphreys on Radio Four's Today Programme and have appeared on GMTV, This Morning, and radio shows including Woman's Hour and many others. On BBC Radio Northampton, I have a weekly slot as an agony aunt.

In 1996, I started working for TEMPER Domestic Violence and have delivered well over 100, 36-hour courses with in excess of 750 people who are or who have been violent, aggressive, abusive with a partner or former partner. As part of this process, a need developed to visually represent a "route map" of 8 basic emotions through which mainly male clients could visualise and grasp their emotional drives and begin to learn how to regulate their own emotions and hence their behaviour.

I have been a contributor to many books written on and contributed to publications on a variety of health issues concerning family well-being and about relationships, and have spoken at major conferences in Europe and the near east.

I'm married with three adult children and am an active grandmother. I also run a successful private practice, Emotional Insights Ltd.
