Many years ago I attended and inspirational conference keynote speech where the speaker showed us a video of a new neural network being created. She told us that research had found that 7 seconds of empathy changed the structure of our brains. This was mind-blowing, challenging and left me with lots of questions!
Empathy is generally seen as an important aspect of effective therapy and yet we often have very little knowledge of why that is so. What is this thing we call Empathy? How come some people are better at it then others, is it about what the therapist feels or what the client experiences? How do we communicate empathy and what happens when its not received?
When we begin to examine empathy, we can find this is a capacity that may not be as easy as it first appears.
In this workshop we shall explore empathy from a psychological, neuroscientific as well as a therapy perspective. We will explore together what gets in the way of empathy and how we can develop this capacity further within ourselves. We will consider the impact on our clients and how we may be able to work more effectively in each 7 seconds on client contact
