I first thought of calling this course "The Body In the Consulting Room." But, for one thing, many of us are not in the consulting room these days, and for another, the body I want to speak about is a far from dead one. The bodies present in our work, our own and our clients', are alive, pulsating, filled with intent, emotion (expansive or tormented) and their own kind of wisdom and intelligence. I know from personal experience that they will inform and sustain us in our quest for healing and growth if we give them their due attention and value.
TA recognises the Three P's of Therapy: Permission, Protection, Potency. I believe there is a fourth, Presence, which encapsulates the other three. If you want to develop this quality, adding physical presence to mental and emotional presence, I believe you'll find this workshop helpful.
We will explore the foundational concepts of Grounding, Centring, Connecting, Engaging, Boundary Formation, and Containment, emphasising the How, without neglecting the Why. Body awareness is a key to good self-care, client safety, and therapeutic effectiveness. In this introductory session the focus will be more on the therapist’s own self awareness, with body focused interventions with clients saved for another time.
